Shade-coffee as a Component of the Regional Landscape in Colombia
Presented April 16, 2000 at the SCAA Convention in San Francisco by Jorge Eduardo Botero, Ph.D., Researcher Cenicafé

Shade coffee farms, and their corresponding types of shade systems, are critical components of Colombia's regional landscape. This presentation explores the importance of shade farms in Colombia and their impact on avian communities. In addition, it discusses the ongoing challenges of integrating shade systems within the coffee growing landscape and stresses the importance of continued research, by organizations such as Cenicafé, on conservation biology issues.

Cenicafé (National Center for Coffee Research) is the Federation's coffee research facility. Created in 1938, it was the first research center to be exclusively devoted to the exploration and development of coffee science and technology. Today, Cenicafé is the recognized leader in bringing the latest cultivation, harvesting, post-production, processing, disease, pest control and other sustainable practices to the coffee world.
